Types of International Health Insurance Plans

Many individuals who purchase international health insurance have never purchased health insurance before. The benefits are not easy to understand and the brochures are often confusing.

Let me give you a crash course in health insurance.

There are two general types of international health insurance plans.

The first is known as an indemnity plan. This plan pays out specific amounts for your medical expenses. For example, a plan might say that it will pay $1,000 a day for each day you are hospitalized. Or, it might pay out $75 for a visit to a physician up to five visits per year.

Indemnity plans are generally less expensive to the second type of plan which we will discuss in a moment. Depending on what is wrong with you, an indemnity plan might fall short of providing complete coverage and you can get stuck with some very large bills.

The second type of plan is what I will call a major medical plan. This plan has a deductible for many expense items. In other words, before the insurance company will pay anything, you must pay expenses up to the limit of the deductible. Don't worry, I will give you a simple example. After the deductible, there is coinsurance. Typical coinsurance might be an 80/20 split. I think an illustration is necessary.

Let us assume that you purchased an international health insurance plan where the deductible was $500 and the coinsurance was 80/20 of the next $5,000. This means that after you pay for the first $500 of medical expenses, the insurance carrier will pay 80% of the next $5,000 in expenses ($4,000) and you are responsible for 20% of the $5,000 ($1,000). After that, the insurance company pays 100%.

Not all expenses are subject to a deductible. Sometimes, they will pay certain expenses immediately without you having to contribute.

The advantage of the second type of plan is that if your hospital bill was $50,000, you would have been responsible for only $2,500. But, with the first plan, where you received $1,000 a day, you could have been responsible for tens of thousands of dollars.

But, There is a Catch

As with everything, there is always a catch.

Catch #1 - To get a major medical plan, you usually have to go through medical underwriting. In other words, they do not issue the plan to individuals who have serious medical problems. Plus, even if they do issue it, they may not cover a medical condition that you already have.

Catch #2 - If you are not a U.S. citizen there are very few restrictions as to where you live and for how long. But, if you are a U.S. citizen who wants to live abroad, you must leave the United States for at least 6 months each year.

Catch #3 - These plans are more expensive than indemnity plans because they have the ability to pay out large sums in the event of a major illness or accident.
