Florida’s New Low Cost Health Insurance Plan – NOT

“I am calling to find out about the new $150 Florida health insurance plan. When will they be available?”

We have a special calculator to give you an approcximate date. But, you can do this very simply by yourself. Just take your birth year and divide by your age. This will give you a close estimate as to when affordable universal coverage will be available

The bill passed by the Florida legislature has some fuzzy language and refers to a health plan that will cost approximately $150 a month for an individual. Currently, the plan does not exist and if and when it does, most of you will not want it.

For starters, this would be a plan that gives you a few office visits, a test or two (nothing expensive such as a MRI or colonoscopy) and perhaps some generic prescription coverage. It is a mini-medical plan. This is another way of saying “we will not cover the big stuff”. If you are not healthy and have major medical bills, you will be just as bad off as you ever where. They have done nothing for you.

In Florida, real health insurance plans have a long list of about 50 items things they must cover. But, these new low-cost plans do not have to cover any of them. They knew that getting any health insurance carrier to create these plans would be near impossible. They wanted to give them some incentives so they dropped the “must have” requirements along with the coverage for major medical.

Keep in mind that the $150 a month is for an individual and not a family. Do not forget that $150 a month (for one person) is $1,800 a year. By a show of hands how many of you think that you will get $1,800 a year in services from this plan (I have special technology that enables me to see your hand if you raise it)?  Put down your hand sir, you are mistaken. Madame, I can see your hand, and pointing the middle finger at me in that fashion is really unnecessary.

Hey folks, has the light gone on yet? Are you starting to realize that:

If I am healthy, I can buy regular major medical insurance for about the same premium as this new low-cost plan. Instead of filling up your gas tank, use some of the money for health insurance.
There are already guaranteed-issue plans that cover more than this plan does.
Giving an insurance carrier $1,800 a year to get a few office visits and the prescriptions I get at Wal-Mart for $4 is insane.
If I have serious medical issues, this plan is useless to me.
The politicians think that I will not realize that this is just a trick to create sound bites at re-election time. “It’s a first step!” No, it’s crap.
We live in state that is cutting its budget to the bone trying to find money to pay teachers, police officers and fireman and dropping essential services. In case you have not noticed, Florida is having a budget crisis.

Bottom Line

We are not about to get a special low-cost health insurance plan in Florida. If you need health insurance and can afford it, then you should get it. If you are not sure if you qualify or if you can afford it, then call me. If you are waiting for any level of government to help you out, you are truly a person of faith.
