Ten Ways To Save Money on Your Florida Health Insurance - Simple ways to save on health insurance in Florida and other states. 1. Use a higher deductible - If you can save $800 a year on Florida health insurance by increasing your deductible by $1,000, you would have to be crazy not to do it. After 15 months on the plan, you have already made back the $1,000. 2. Buy Critical Illness Insurance - These plans pay out lump sums if you have a serious illness. Now you can move to a much higher deductible. They can also be used in lieu of or to supplement disability insurance and pay for treatment that a Florida health insurance plan might not allow. 3. Use an accident plan for active children and adults instead of lower deductibles - Once again, do not buy a lower deductible because you are worried about the emergency room. Use an inexpensive accident plan that will pay for the emergency room with no deductible at all. 4. Lose Weight and Stop Smoking (tough to do at the same time) - Some plans charge up to 50% more for overweight applicants. I do not have to tell you what they do to smokers. 5. Use a prescription deductible - Florida health insurance carriers really soak you for the prescription coverage. Generics are fairly inexpensive and having a deductible for brand name prescriptions will save a lot of money on premiums. Don't pay hundreds per year extra so you can save fifty bucks on a prescription once a year. 6. Use a hosptial supplement - Take the higher deductible and cover the hospital with a supplement. We have the best hospital supplement on the market. Much better than the plan that advertises on TV with the duck. 7. Mix and Match Plans- If you choose a plan with doctor and prescription co pays for the children, and a higher deductible and some coverage for an annual physical for yourself. 8. Stay in network - All Florida health insurance plans have networks. Going out of network with a hospital can be very costly. Stay in network whenever possible. Ask the agent to check the hospitals in the network that are of interest to you. 9. Read the policy - When you finally get approved and get the policy in the mail, read the Outline of Coverage. Look at the hospital coverage parts and the physician and prescription coverage sections. Is the coverage the same as was explained to you by the agent? 10. Work with an agent that offers plans from many different companies - Captive agents who sell for one company cannot offer you the selection you need. Be careful, a lot of them will tell you that they have many different plans, but in truth, they are from the same company. Most of these characters have plans with huge association or signup fees (more than $50). Stay away.
